Minimal quantities of black powder would plug the suction screens in front of the diesel fuel pumps. This was happening very frequently, leading to constant swapping of pumps, pipe insulation removal and disassembly to remove the “witch’s hat” strainers for cleaning. Often, the line leading to the strainer was also plugged and the pipe had to be manually cleaned all the way back to the upstream valve.
Install a BPS Magnetic Separator specially designed with inline connections.
The magnetic separator had sufficient holding strength to capture large quantities of Black Powder that had been plugging the screens. Since installation of the BPS magnetic separator, the pump is operating as expected and the efficient cleaning routine has significantly reduced operator effort. The efficient cleaning routine has prevented outage incidents.
The separator also prolonged the change intervals on the coaleser; the clay filter elements’ operating lives were extended to the point that 15 sets of changes were eliminated annually. The resultant product cleanliness allowed for the diesel fuel to be sold at a premium.
